Raised on the farm with horses, cows,
pigs, chickens and a massive garden. Not too fond of gardening
now :)
I spent many years with horses (over 40 yrs)
as a kid with no fear, as a breeder and
trainer. I still do training today but the breeding end is gone to
leave room for the hobby of my horse. Going to shows in Hunter,
Dressage, Western Pleasure and I always try for the high point. Then
there are those treasured times where I go out just for the wonderful
beauty of a peaceful trail ride.
As a person who has trained many, many horses and all
of them different, I learned about the different personalities of each
horse. No two horses are the same. They all react differently to
satisfaction, pleasure, pain, frustration, fear, and confusion.
I have been with horses all my life
and started training my own horses in my teens and
then expanded from there, in my later 20's, to train
other people's horses from time to time and then it
became a full time project. I have worked with
other trainers and shared experiences. I don't have
certificates such as Parelli or John Lyons because I
have been training before they wrote a book. It is
common sense, knowing and understanding the
behaviour of a horse and knowing when they have had
enough. Being with horses most of my life has given
me the opportunity to learn so much from them as
individuals, in a herd environment and during
breeding. Can't be taught this, you have to live
it.
I teach the horse in the way that they understand.
They will never think like me. They learn each
step at a time and then it gets incorporated into a
movement. No different than a person learning
to read. It is one word at a time and then
sentences can be put together.
When a normally happy horse is not quite right, it may
be something as simple as needing the tensions relieved in the muscles
or a poor fitting saddle.
Odd changes in temperament/behaviour are a sign of
something not being right. Look at the big picture don't just get
frustrated with your horse.
